Bodybuilder Max O’Connor Talk’s with Muscle-Munch

How did you get started?

I began training in the gym after a torn ACL on my right knee playing rugby. The weight training was aimed at increasing strength and stability of my lower body. I joined a gym where the focus of training in there was more about power lifting and bodybuilding. I loved training down there and after training with a friend for his first bodybuilding contest in 2008 I thought I would enter, I havnt looked back since.

What your diet consists of & why?

Meat and A LOT of it, a high protein diet all year round is the most vital part of a bodybuilders diet! I try to mix up my sources of protein e.g. fish, beef mince or steak, chicken, turkey, eggs, cottage cheese & quark.

What are your max lifts?

I have done a 1rep max lift but I don’t feel like it has any benefit to me as a bodybuilder. My strongest lifts are Squats 240kg for sets of 6reps, Seated dumbbell shoulder press 50kg for sets of 10 & I Deadlift 265kg for sets of 6.

What’s your opinion on the run of the mill “Bulk & cut” way of training

It works for me, if you want to add on big muscle mass then unfortunately your going to have to carry round a bit of excess whilst your trying to build mass.

Who is your favorite bodybuilder?

Dorian Yates is my favourite bodybuilder, I love to watch his old videos on YouTube and see the progress he made from year to year. Im probably a little bit biased as he’s from the Midlands same as me!

If you could give someone one piece of advice, what would it be?

Enjoy it!! Bodybuilding is a lifestyle choice, nobodies making you do it!!
