Muscle-munch talks with Gaspari Athlete: Lydia Rees

How did you get started?

I have always been interested in sport and took part in athletics and competing at county level from a young age. My love for weight training came after I started to see a change in my body. I realised that by lifting weights and changing my dietary intake I could begin to sculpt the body that I desired.

I decided that I wanted to compete after having a child and watching the UKBFF Bodyfitness finals in Nottingham. I admired the dedication and the shape that these ladies on stage had, and from that moment on I decided to train and eat as if I was going to compete myself.

I competed in my first show this year at the Welsh UKBFF Bikini Qualifier and I placed first. I then went on to compete in the British UKBFF Bikini Finals where I place second. I am now looking  to compete next year but what competition is yet to be decided.

What your diet consists of and why?

My diet consists of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and vegetables. I eat every 2 – 3 hours and have six meals a day, consistency is key! This is what keeps my metabolism up to help me burn fat through the day as well as build muscle.

What supplements do you use?

I have Gaspari Myofusion with my oats in the morning and a shake before bed. Before training I have two scoops of Superpump Max, during training I have SizeOn and my post workout shake consists of Intrapro. I also take Gaspari BCAA 6000 and Aminomax.

Example of diet

  • Meal 1: 60 grams oats one.
  • Meal 2: 100 grams of chicken Broccoli and Sweet Potato.
  • Meal 3: 100 grams of Steak and green beans.
  • Meal 4: 100 grams of chicken, Sweet Potato.
  • Meal 5: 100 grams of Fish, Broccoli.
  • Meal 6: one scoop of Gaspari Myofusion and teaspoon of Macadamia oil.

What does your current work-out routine look like?

  • Monday : Back and Calves.
  • Tuesday : Chest and Biceps.
  • Wednesday: Off.
  • Thursday : Shoulders and Triceps.
  • Friday: Legs.

I do 20 minutes of HIIT Cardio after each session and on Saturday and Sunday I do Spinning. I absolutely love Spin, it gets the heart rate up and I feel fantastic after each session!

What are your max lifts?

If I am honest, I do not train for max lifts, I concentrate on keeping everything tight and making sure my form is spot on. I do four sets on each exercise and aim for about 15-20 reps on each.

What’s your favourite cheat meal?

My favourite cheat meal, that’s an easy one! I love Sunday Roast followed by Cheescake!

How do you stay motivated?

My son is my biggest motivation. Being associated with a company such as Gaspari is motivation in itself… but seeing my body change shape, family, friends and being the best I possibly can be always motivates me. I always come away really motivated after watching a show or going to a fitness expo, being surrounded by like-minded people always throws out positive vibes!

Who is your favourite bodybuilder, strongman or powerlifter?

My favourite Bodybuilder has to be Flex Wheeler, just because of the pure symmetry and awesome lines! Female athletes I admire Ava Cowan for her hard work, dedication and outlook on life…. inspirational!

If you could give someone any advice, what would it be?

Always be true to yourself.                                                                                     #
