Muscle-Munch talks with Strength Coach: Elliott Hulse

How did you get started?

I’ve been training since I was 4 years old.  My uncle was a bodybuilder, gymnast and a black belt in Kung Fu, he lived with us and taught me and my brothers how to train when we were very young.

In high school he taught us how to use barbells to get stronger and bigger for football.  I earned a college scholarship for football and decided to study exercise science so I could earn a living by teaching others how to get stronger also!

What Supplements do you use?

This changes based on my goals at the time.  But as a base I always include:

  • High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil,
  • Vitamin C
  • Living Fuel

Example of diet

Right now my diet consists mainly of raw eggs, heavy cream, chicken, beef and lots of veggies like collard greens, asparagus and cauliflower.

Here is what I ate yesterday…

  • Meal 1: 8:00am – Kale and Sardines
  • Meal 2: 13:00pm – Sweet Potato and Turkey Breast
  • Meal 3: 17:00pm – Chicken Legs and Thighs w/ Kale

What does your current work-out routine look like?

My current routine is a mix of powerlifting and crossfit. I hit a low intensity bodyweight workout in the morning 5 x per week, and hit a high intensity, low volume PL workout in the evening.

In the morning I do low intensity body weight workouts to burn fat and increase GPP while maintaining muscle glycogen for my evening workout.

Sample morning workout

  • BW squats x 20
  • Lunges x 20
  • Step Ups x 20
  • Push Ups x 20
  • Band Assisted Chin Ups x 20

I take a 3 – 5 min rest and repeat once more.

In the evening I follow a “West Side” type workout including one main power lift and accessory exercises including body building

Sample evening workout

  • Dead Lift – 1 x 2 (with a few warm up sets)
  • Speed Dead lifts 6 x 3
  • Bend Over Rows 3 x 8
  • Pull Downs 3 x 8
  • Good Mornings 3 x 8

What are your max lifts?

  • Bench Press – 455
  • Dead Lift – 600-ish
  • Log Clean & Press – 365

Those are the ones I can remember… I should spend more time recording these!

What’s your opinion on the run of the mill “Bulk & cut” way of training?

I’ve tried it and it does work… the only problem is that after the “Bulk” I have had a hard time getting all of the fat off… it seems to have detrimental long term effect on the metabolic / hormonal system.

I prefer now to gain “clean mass” by cycling the diet more often and adjusting based on how strong my lifts are.

Who is your favourite bodybuilder, strongman or powerlifter?

I like most of the old school guys like Arthur Saxon, George Hackenschmidt and even Vince Gironda.  Although not really old-school, I always love the physiques on Mike Mentzer and Franco Columbo.

If you could give someone any advice, what would it be?

“Do the thing, and you will have the power.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Basically, instead of waiting until you have the power to do something… like enough time, enough money or enough muscle — go and DO “the thing” right  NOW and the power will eventually be added to you.”
